Dilettantes Behind the Mic
The first of the dilettantes, Simon is actually an engineer. A self-proclaimed film connoisseur with no background in the arts, Simon’s “expert” opinions should be taken with a grain of salt. Outside of being a movie junkie, he is passionate about the environment. He is actively working on decarbonization the automotive industry, the pursuit of sustainability in the, community, the emergence of renewable energy, and the disruption of centralized fossil fuel intensive energy infrastructure.
Simon’s goal on this podcast is to convince Omar, the resident caveman, to watch movies mostly everyone in the world has seen. Simon’s watched over 1000 movies over the course of his life, which makes you wonder if he actually has a life. Why he is doing this is beyond anybody’s guess; it might be due to the entertainment value, and the deep, somewhat philosophical discussions that occur.
A through and through dilettante, Omar is as lost as everyone in life. Living in the Greater Toronto Area has made him into a public transit enthusiast, and try-new-food person. Besides following transit news, Omar spends his time reading history and classics. Ask him to talk about books, and he will engage on a long conversation about his love of George Orwell; stop him before it’s too late.
Just like Simon, Omar is an engineer; and that’s where the similarities stop. The number of movies Omar’s watched can be counted on your fingers. “The Lord of the Rings”, “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”, and “12 Angry Men”; he’s watched them all. He hopes to increase the number of movies he’s seen by being part of this podcast. Whereas Simon is methodological and concise, Omar loves cracking jokes and rambling.
